What a fabulous find! Years ago (1966) when we emigrated to New Zealand, my father sent a series of tape recorded messages back to friends and family in England. We all had to speak on them. I was about 13 at the time. I wish I had them now. I expect they have long since been destroyed.

Oh wouldn't that be amazing if you could find them?! Glad you have the memory, at least. Things just seem to disappear over the years. : (

I recall my father flushing the toilet on the first one of them to prove we had a proper toilet with running water. In those days, some people had a very uneducated view of where we were moving to and envisioned us living in a mud hut somewhere in the wilderness !

Love this story! I remember when I was 12yo, our family moved from Kansas to Minnesota and I desperately missed my friends. I recorded my letters on cassette tape. I wonder if she still has them? What a fascinating find that would be!

And, my grandma has a tin similar to the one you shared. Full of buttons. I wish it had a little bit of her recorded voice too.

Instead of a mixtape, a spoken letter. That's so sweet. Do you know how to get in touch with your friend? It would be worth checking! (Ah yes, the buttons. They do look pretty cool displayed in the right kind of glass jar : )

I've tried off and on for years to track my Kansas friend down with no luck. I will keep trying. :)

Nancy, OMG! What a great post! Years ago I had old 9mm videos digitized but also a reel-to-reel that I had no idea what was on it. One part was Christmas music which was pretty disappointing, but the other part was a copy of one of mom's cassette recordings she sent to my sister who was living in Okinawa with her Air Force husband. I couldn't believe I was hearing her voice - she's been gone since 1972. Also, on the tape was me, talking about what was going on in my life. According to our discussions it was probably in my first year of college in late 68 or 69. You've given me a lot to think about this morning. Thanks!

Wow, what an unexpected find. I can only imagine what it was like to hear your mom’s voice again after all those years—especially when you didn’t even know it was there. And hearing your own voice from back then too? That’s a time capsule if I’ve ever heard one. Funny how voices bring back so much more than just memories. Glad my post got you thinking, and I appreciate you sharing this!
