Sometimes I watch YouTube videos about How To Create YouTube Videos. Let’s call this self-referential content consumption. It’s like reading books about how to write books, or my very favorite — learning to make money online by watching videos about how to make money online, presented by people trying to make money online.
The other day I opened a video entitled, “Why People Over 40 NEED To Start a YouTube Channel!” The rest of the week, every 3rd video that YouTube recommended was something with “over 40” in the title.
The implication? My children might feel like they are too old to start a channel, and perhaps feel intimidated by all the new-fangled video tech, but they should consider the fact that because they are older and more experienced, they have more to share than the youngsters.
And all this time I thought they were the youngsters!
It made me feel like a dinosaur, and because I am procrastinating on a harder project, I decided to make my own “over 40” video with a family history twist. It’s embedded below. Why should you watch it? You can see the final result of my attempts to set myself on fire, which I discussed in a recent post. And if you watch long enough, you’ll see my giraffe ears. I mean, who can resist the giraffe ears?
The project I’m procrastinating on is called The Susie Situation. It’s a story about my Aunt Susie, who was born in 1898 and embroiled in a strange family mystery when she was 13. My cousins Kate and Melody have been helping me with this. The problem is that I set it aside for a few months, and now I need to remember where I was and immerse myself in the story again. That’s hard work. Why work hard when you could wear giraffe ears instead?
Our way of working on this has actually been an excellent example of “Share Your Work,” and I’ll talk more about it in a couple of days. In the meanwhile, if you’re over 40, you should probably take your decrepit self to bed, because apparently, you’re old! (But first, here is the video.)
I love this! Your sense of humor comes through along with your love of family history.
So much fun and such an approachable way to share family stories - great job! I'm a big video-shy, but you've definitely got me thinking. Thanks!
